Yellow Light represents one of the first public-facing build-out within the freshly renovated Michigan Central Station, offering a rare opportunity to design in one of Detroit’s most iconic landmarks. Over the past decade, Michigan central has transformed from a symbol of blight into a beacon of the city’s resurgence.
The design of the modestly-sized shop draws inspiration from the station’s grand scale, its refined detailing, and its rich mix of historic and luxurious materials. Our approach sought to reinterpret the language of historical detailing through a contemporary lens, embedding texture, warmth, and craft into every surface. Three carved niches in the back of the space are programmed with storage, work surface, and merchandise shelving. These niches are wrapped in a hand-dyed, fluted concrete panel that echoes the solidity and permanence of the materials cladding station’s main arcade. The lighting strategy builds on this framework, employing a series of screens and recessed niches to create layers of indirect light, intentionally dimly washing the walls and coffee counter.
One of the most distinctive aspects of the project was the opportunity to integrate salvaged Mankato marble columns from the station itself into the coffee bar. These artifacts, carefully repurposed, anchor the new fit-out to the building’s storied past while establishing a tactile connection between old and new. In doing so, the shop becomes more than a place to grab a coffee and donut, it stands as a small but meaningful extension of the station’s renewed life.
